UCC Hosts Two-day Summit on Leadership and Literacy

 

The University of Cape Coast (UCC), in partnership with Legacy Library, USA, has organized a two-day summit focused on leadership and literacy under the theme “Empowering Visionary Leaders, Transforming Education, and Shaping the Future.”

The event brought together academics, politicians, students, and virtual participants to explore critical issues such as technology integration and cybersecurity, literacy and the science of reading, Artificial Intelligence, inclusive education for learners with disabilities, and educational leadership.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Gary Walker-Roberts from the National University, USA, highlighted the importance of empathy, honesty, accountability, and trustworthiness in leadership. He stressed that educational leaders must embody values such as respect, trust, reliability, fairness, and consistency, serving as role models for their communities.

Dr. Walker-Roberts further emphasized that a clear and strategic vision is vital for driving transformative change within education systems.

He emphasized that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is crucial in transforming education by delivering personalized learning experiences tailored to each student’s needs.

According to him, AI-powered platforms offer learners customized lessons, practice resources, and timely feedback, enabling them to understand subjects more effectively at their own pace.

He also urged students to act responsibly on social media and refrain from using it to spread misinformation.

In her address, Dr. Gigi Darko, CEO of Legacy Library, highlighted literacy as a powerful tool that empowers individuals to seize opportunities. She encouraged parents to create supportive literacy environments for children to strengthen their learning abilities and secure a brighter future.

Dr. Darko further stated that in a world where knowledge equates to power, books serve as the gateway to limitless possibilities, stressing the importance of instilling a love for reading and learning in children from an early age.

She emphasized that literacy is a priceless gift with the power to transform lives and create a brighter future for everyone.

According to her, promoting literacy helps cultivate unity, understanding, and empowerment. She called on the public to support educational initiatives and serve as ambassadors of hope in a world often marked by division.

Chairing the event, UCC Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Denis Aheto expressed appreciation for the collaboration between UCC and Legacy Library, USA. He encouraged the exchange of ideas that can influence and shape progressive educational policies.
